Backoff Strategies for CSMA/CD with Real-Time Applications

چکیده

Contention-based access strategies have the principal advantage of being distributed and probabilistic, which is good insurance against system failure; however, the resulting access waiting times normally have an exponential distribution, showing maxima about ten times above the average. In a recent paper /4/, we proposed an Ethernet-compatible contention protocol with an access queueing mechanism that achieves nearly deterministic behaviour. In the present paper, compatibility is abandoned for shorter contention times, e.g. better throughput. An algorithm is developed to adapt the contention behaviour of nodes to the present network traffic. It is shown how distributed access queueing control can be added to this without increasing contention times.

Performance comparison of CSMA/RI and CSMA/CD with BEB

In this paper, we analyze our previously proposed protocol CSMA/RI, and its closest related protocol CSMA/CD. Our models include the widely used retransmission algorithm The Truncated Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) algorithm. The analysis is performed under two realistic traffic scenarios the saturation and the disaster scenarios. The performance comparison of CSMA/RI and CSMA/CD is also pres...

Effect of CSMA/CD on Self-Similarity of Network Traffic

It is now well known that Internet traffic exhibits self-similarity, which cannot be described by traditional Markovian models such as the Poisson process. The causes of self-similarity of network traffic must be identified because understanding the nature of network traffic is critical in order to properly design and implement computer networks and network services like the World Wide Web. Whi...

Probabilistic Model Checking of the CSMA/CD Protocol Using PRISM and APMC

Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) is the protocol for carrier transmission access in Ethernet networks (international standard IEEE 802.3). On Ethernet, any Network Interface Card (NIC) can try to send a packet in a channel at any time. If another NIC tries to send a packet at the same time, a collision is said to occur and the packets are discarded. The CSMA/CD protoc...

Equilibrium point analysis of the binary exponential backoff algorithm

A Markovian model of the backoff algorithm used in the slotted 1-persistent carrier sense multiple access/collision detection (CSMA/CD) access protocol is developed in order to analyze the performance of such a network. Due to its complexity, the existing models of the CSMA/ CD protocol do not incorporate the effects of the backoff algorithm. In this work, we developed an approximate Markovian ...

Introduction to Real-Time Ethernet I

Real-time electronic distributed control systems are an important development of the technological evolution. Electronics are employed to control and monitor most safety-critical applications from flight decks to hospital operating rooms. As these real-time systems become increasingly prevalent and advanced, so does the demand to physically distribute the control in strict real-time. Thus, ther...
